The remainder of the 2020 Iowa Legislative Assembly is somewhat unclear as the House and Senate are suspended until April 15th, though House District 20 Representative Ray Sorensen says he’s trying to work on some budget areas during the downtime.
Sorensen (R) is chairman of the economic development budget, and he says before COVID-19 started spreading in Iowa his budget may have been seeing a surplus, but due to the state resources being used for COVID-19 he imagines this and other aspects of the total budget for next fiscal year will see some cuts. Sorensen emphasizes that he has no magic ball on when the session will actually resume, “Essentially right now with the legislature on pause, the governor, it’s kind of a one-man show, you know? She’s taking advice from the legislative council and she’s listening to the authorities and obviously the Iowa Department of Public Health and things like that so the rest of us are kind of patiently waiting this out with the rest of y’all and trying to stay up to date.”
Sorensen adds this time away from the capitol is beneficial in trying to connect more online and in person with constituents. To hear more from Sorensen, listen to Monday’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County program on air and at raccoonvalleyradio.com.
