The 2019 novel coronavirus has impacted several aspects of our lives and for a lot of us that means sports.
The sporting world has certainly seen drastic changes at all levels, from the spring season being cancelled for Iowa high school sports, to the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League suspending their respective seasons. With virtually no sports happening, it has also impacted sports betting in Iowa.
Wild Rose Jefferson General Manager Travis Dvorak explains the impacts of the virus on sports betting.
“For the most part our sports betting has all but stopped. There are a few options out there but with all the major U.S. sports shut down for now, there isn’t a whole lot that people are interested in betting.”
Dvorak adds, their sportsbook partner DraftKings is currently trying to find other ways for sports bets to happen in the state.
“There’s different sports going on throughout the world. So you’re slowly seeing that DraftKings and some other companies are trying to add some of these other sports. They’re working with the state of Iowa to see if there’s other leagues that people can look in, and watch, and maybe make a few bets.”
The restrictions that Governor Kim Reynolds recently extended has also temporarily closed casinos through April 7th.
