The Greene County and Paton-Churdan school districts are underway with their respective “Grab and Go” lunch programs.
Since both districts decided to take Governor Kim Reynolds recommendation and closing school until April 13th, students can still receive a free lunch Monday-Friday while it is closed due to COVID-19 concerns. Both districts will serve lunches to children ages 0-18 years-old and funding is coming from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The sites for Greene County include the middle school gym in Jefferson, along with the community centers in Grand Junction, Scranton and Rippey. Paton-Churdan’s one site is at the bus stop near the school building in Churdan. Greene County Superintendent Tim Christensen describes some other aspects with the temporary program.
“Again you don’t need to get out of your car, it’s drive-up. We’re not going to require that every kid that gets a lunch is in the car, I know that some districts are doing that. All meals will be prepared in the middle school kitchen. Again looking at it from the aspect, if we prepare meals in every single kitchen in the district, then again we’re creating exposure that we don’t want. So it’s the middle school kitchen and then we will be taking the meals to those sites.”
Greene County meals will be served from 11:30am-1pm and Paton-Churdan’s will be from 11:30am-12:30pm Monday-Friday. To hear more from Christensen about how the district is responding to COVID-19 concerns, listen to today’s Community State Bank in Paton Let’s Talk Greene County program.
