Local food pantries may be needed now more than ever with the recent spread of COVID-19.

Greene County Action Resource Center Acting Manager Shirley Haupert says they are continuing to stay open Wednesdays from 8:30-11:30am. She talks about an adjustment that has been made with the social distancing requirements and to protect volunteers and clients.

“Clients pull up in their car and we have some food already pre-packed for them, so it’s minimal exposure for all of us. We put it in their truck and then they are able to get on their way. As you can figure, they were so appreciative that we were open to help them.”

Haupert also stresses the need for donations.

“The main thing that we are looking for is support monetarily with cash. Meat is the main thing, which we’ll need to go out and purchase. Also we’ll need to purchase milk and eggs. We’ll get those here from our local grocery stores since they probably might be limited on what we can get from (the Iowa Food Bank in) Des Moines.”

Haupert notes donations can be dropped off at 1006 North Vine or by calling her at 515-386-8168.
