Religion is something many people turn to during uncertain times, but even churches are being adversely affected by the 2019 novel coronavirus pandemic.

In an effort to reduce the spread of the virus through social distancing, the places of worship around Perry have universally halted public services. This includes St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, as the Des Moines Diocese ordered all parishes this week to cease all public services including weekly and daily Mass. Similarly, the Perry Ministerial Association cancelled all their community Lenten services, and each of the churches in the organization has stopped all Sunday worship services until further notice.

The public can turn to online worship services from local churches including Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church and First Christian Church through their websites or via social media. Additionally, most churches remain open to the public for small gatherings and individual prayer, but people are advised to call ahead before visiting. The fate of Holy Week and Easter services are undetermined at this time, but the individual congregations promise to keep the public informed as the dates get closer.
