The Jefferson City Council met Tuesday night in special session.

The Council held a public hearing on the proposed property tax levy for the 2021 fiscal year budget. The proposed general fund tax levy is $12.39 per $1,000 of property valuation. It is a slight decrease from the current fiscal year general fund tax levy of $12.48. However, due to the Council requesting more than a two-percent increase in tax asking dollars, the Iowa Legislature requires public entities to hold a separate public hearing. Following the hearing, the Council approved the 3.51-percent increase.

Finally, the Council set March 31st at 5:30pm as the public hearing date and time to consider adopting the 2021 fiscal year budget. City Clerk Diane Kennedy said the state government granted an extension for cities and counties to submit their budgets from March 31st to April 30th, due to the coronavirus concern.
