The Greene County elected office holders will see an increase in pay going into the next fiscal year.

The Board of Supervisors recently approved the salary schedule for the elected officials, including themselves. The County Compensation Board set the initial increases including: six-percent raise for County Treasurer, five-percent for County Attorney, four-percent each for County Sheriff and Recorder and three-percent for each County Supervisor and County Auditor. Supervisor Chair John Muir responds to why the Board felt it necessary to agree with the Compensation Board’s recommendation of six-percent and five-percent raises for the County Treasurer and County Attorney, respectively.

“Those two (positions) we can see – in the case of the treasurer – she’s (Katlynn Mechaelsen) generating more revenue with the funds that we have with the different things that she’s doing, which benefits the county. And the County Attorney (Thomas Laehn) the responsibilities that he’s taking on has markedly shown us a savings in things that we had farmed out to other law firms in the past. So both of those positions justify a nice raise.”

Muir says the rest of the raises were within the range the Supervisors were comfortable with, but adds they need to be more active with conversations with the Compensation Board during the negotiation process before they make their recommendation to them.
