The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn School Board discussed the topic of class rank at their recent meeting.
Since last school year, the District has been in conversation about doing away with the measurement in terms of information supplied to colleges for admission. Superintendent Greg Dufoe points out that class rank has long been an antiquated system, and has proven to be a hindrance for districts like ADM. “Really the rationale is that it’s becoming more and more commonplace, many high schools in Iowa have removed class rank from their system. It’s an internal measure that ranks students against each other within the same high school, so it’s not a comparative measure with students externally. Also with our system, many students who have a high GPA will not be in the top third of their graduating class, which can put them at a competitive disadvantage when they’re trying to gain admission into colleges.”
Dufoe says the School Board will consider a resolution in April to officially remove class rank from their measurements, effective starting with the current junior class. He adds, the Iowa Board of Regents, which operates the three state universities – Iowa State, Iowa, and Northern Iowa – has already removed class rank from their admission requirements, so there’s already a movement to do away with the measurement entirely.
