The high school indoor track & field season starts tomorrow for the Greene County girls and on Tuesday for the boys. Coach Derek Merk’s girls’ team and Coach Chad Morton’s boys’ squads both return athletes who have been place winners in the past at Iowa’s biggest high school competitions, the State Meet, and Drake Relays.

The Rams will send female athletes to the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls on Monday for the A.D. Dickinson Relays, and the boys will compete in the same venue on Tuesday. The Dickinson Relays are a one-class event with no team scoring and athletes from all over the state representing all sizes of schools.

Junior Brianna Osterson leads the Greene County girls’ contingent. She placed sixth in the long jump last year at the Drake Relays and is a former State place winner in that event. Others with State experience will join her.

The boys are led by seniors Colby Kafer and Carter Morton. Kafer went 22-6-1/2″ last May to place second in the Class 2A long jump and he’s also a sprinter of note. Morton has a career best in the high jump of 6′ 8″. He place third at State and fifth at Drake in 2019, and is also a returning place winner at State in the 110 meter high hurdles. Others with big meet experience also return for the Greene County boys.
