After serving in the Iowa House of Representatives for the last decade, Republican Chris Hagenow from Urbandale announced he would not be seeking reelection this year.
Hagenow is wrapping up his first term representing the 19th House District, after serving the 59th District from 2009-12 and the redistricted 43rd District from 2013-18. He was elected to his current seat following the retirement of former Representative Ralph Watts of Adel. The 48-year-old is a founding partner at the Des Moines law firm Whitaker, Hagenow & Gustoff, and was the House Majority Leader from 2016-19. In a public statement, Hagenow said it was his honor to serve in the Iowa House and help lead the Republican caucus, adding he’s proud of what he and his colleagues have accomplished the last 12 years.
His decision to step down was mostly influenced by wanting to spend more time with family and begin the next chapter in their lives, though he promised to stay involved and find new ways to serve the State of Iowa. Republican Carter Nordman of Adel has thrown his hat into the ring to replace Hagenow, while Democrat Nick Miller of Polk City has also filed nomination papers for the District 19 seat. The filing deadline for state and federal offices for the June 2nd primary election is March 13th.
