We’re barely into March, yet the indoor track & field season starts early next week for the Greene County High School teams. The girls compete on March 9 and the boys on March 10, both inside the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls at the A.D. Dickinson High School Relays.
Coach Derek Merk will take a partial squad to compete in the one-class event featuring teams of all sizes from all parts of the state. Junior Brianna Osterson is a long jumper/sprinter of note. She placed sixth in the long jump last season at the Drake Relays and is a two-time State qualifier in that event. Junior thrower Brooklyn Olson qualified in the discus throw for the 2019 State Meet, but discus is an outdoors only event, so Olson is scheduled to compete in the shot put at UNI.
Coach Chad Morton has two high level track & field athletes in Morton’s son, Carter, and fellow senior Colby Kafer. Morton was third in the Class 2A high jump last season at State and was fifth at the Drake Relays. He has a career best leap of 6’8″ and has committed to track & field at UNI starting with the next school year. Morton is also a State place winner in 110 meter high hurdles and was ninth in the 400 meter low hurdles. Kafer is the returning State 3A runner-up in the long jump with a career best leap of 22′ 6-12″, and is also a sprinter.
The Rams also plan on other indoor meets with the first outdoor meet of the season schedule for March 30 at Linduska Field in Jefferson.
