International Women’s Day is Sunday, March 8th, and in Perry that will again have special significance the day before. This Saturday, the public is invited to the annual International Women’s Day Coffee at La Poste.
The event was started by Carol Cavanaugh, who experienced the holiday while she lived in Kazakhstan, where it has a bigger significance than it does in the United States. This year’s observance will run from 10 a.m. – noon, with four different speakers addressing attendees. Additionally, there will be a second event Saturday starting at around 1:30 p.m., featuring the premier of a documentary on the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage and Iowan Carrie Chapman Catt’s involvement.
Cavanaugh encourages men and women of all ages to attend the coffee and film screening, and says they will be both entertaining and informative. “I think it’s just a great time for women to connect. And the speakers are all very different, which is sort of one of my goals. And also I want to make sure everyone understands that it is two events, but they’re one right after another. And there’s a luncheon in between there for just a little bit, and that’ll give time (for) people to mingle. But anyone that’s interested, please come, and there’s no charge for the event. And if you have some ideas you’d like for next year, I’d like to hear about that too.”
