McKinley Robbins wrestled at the lightest of the 14 high school weight classes, but he was a heavyweight among those at 106 lbs. Robbins, a freshman, at Greene County High School, completed his first season of varsity wrestling with a 37-2 record and a second place finish in Class 2A at the State Tournament in Des Moines.

In the process, Robbins became the first Ram to reach the State finals since 1995. He’s the first freshman in the 55 seasons of the program based in Jefferson to place at a State wrestling tournament, let alone wrestling for a Championship. In addition, the win total is the most for a Ram ninth grader, and he won conference, sectional, and district titles.

The Rams will have Robbins and fellow State qualifier Brenner Gallagher in the practice room next year. Gallagher, a sophomore, finished in the top 12 in 2A at 113 lbs.
