Six area wrestling programs have wrestlers in tonight’s Class 2A semifinals with berths in the Saturday night finals on the line. All three Raccoon Valley Radio stations will cover all the action play-by-play, and all the matches will be streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Start time is 7:30 p.m.
Greene County freshman McKinley Robbins was on the mat first and was convincing in winning a 15-5 major decision over previously undefeated sophomore Lane Scorpil of Columbus Community. Robbins is the first Rams wrestler to reach the state finals since 1995. Hes now 37-1 and has won his last 35 matches. The finals opponent is Camron Phetxoumphone of Webster City. The two met the first weekend of the season with the Lynx winning 7-4.
Cody Fisher from Madrid, the Woodward-Granger wrestler, reaches the finals for the fourth straight year. He’ll try to win his second title, when he’ll face Kobe Simon of West Liberty. Fisher improved to 51-0 this season. The Iowa State recruit won a 12-3 major decision in the semifinals over Seth Adrian of Assumption, Davenport.
Two area wrestlers met in a 285 lbs. semifinal when top seed Kaden Sutton and fourth seed Derrin Sesker of Van Meter/Earlham faced off. The match went overtime with Sutton winning 3-2 after two 30 second overtime periods.
Ogden’s Blake Haub reached the 1A final at 220 lbs. with a 4-2 victory over top seeded Joel Mendoza of Eagle Grove. Haub improves to 49-3 with all his losses to 2A’s Fisher. The finals opponent for the Bulldog is
Winterset entered the night in fifth place in the team race with three in the semifinals and another on the consolation side. The Huskies went 0-4 with three losses by a single point and another by three points.
The semifinalists are listed below. A win in the semi’s put a wrestler in Saturday night’s championship. A loss means a finish Saturday afternoon anywhere from third through sixth.

Five others from the area in 2A will be top eight place winners anywhere from third through eighth. That list includes Perry sophomore Cole Nelson (113), Riley Harger (120) and Caleb Swalla (170), both of Van Meter/Earlham, Jack West of Winterset (145), and Panorama’s Emry Colby (145). These wrestlers compete in tonight’s consolation third round. A win in that round means a finish as high as third is possible. A loss in the third consolation round means a single match on Saturday afternoon for seventh/eighth place.
