In an effort to continually update their technology and have functioning equipment, the Perry School District recently purchased over 500 new laptops for student use.

Perry has a one-to-one computer-to-student ratio in grades 2-12, with kindergarten and 1st grade utilizing shared tablets. In order to keep their computer supply up to date, the School Board tasked the Technology Department to purchase as many as possible with $150,000. Technology Director Rich Nichols came back with a bid that would net the District 586 Google Chromebooks, along with bags and management licenses. The laptops will be given to the incoming 3rd grade class, with the rest filling out the 5th grade and teacher needs.

Perry Superintendent Clark Wicks says the computers have become a necessity for today’s learning, and he applauds Nichols for the work it took to identify what would be the best use of the school’s funds. “He’s gone through a long process of screening the different types of computers, and we really feel that the Chromebooks are very durable and they have very few repairs. The other thing that’s a plus is that to prepare for the upcoming tests in the end of February and March and April, we find that you have to have those Chromebooks. And they are able to take the tests in a much more efficient manner.”
