The Iowa High School Speech Association is hosting the 2020 Large Group All-State Speech Festival tomorrow, and representatives from both Perry and Adel-DeSoto-Minburn will be in attendance.
Neither school has any groups performing during the day, but they will be honored during the opening ceremonies along with the other All-State selections from around the state. The Perry reader’s theater entry, “Fly Away Home,” earned a trip to the festival. However, with many of the students committed to helping run tomorrow’s Perry Band Olympics, it was fortuitous for them to be chosen as non-performers. Meanwhile, ADM had their choral reading piece, “Mi Amigo: Tony’s Tribute,” and their varsity improv acting group of Kale Kester, Grace Hatchitt, Max Weesner, and Seth Entriken selected as non-performing All-State entries.
ADM Speech Coach Jacque Seidl says she’s proud of the students who qualified, adding that whether as performing or non-performing, being selected to All-State speech is a big deal. “All-State is more about them (the judges) individually picking who they think is worthy of All-State, and then there’s lots of numbers and things they got to figure out. So it’s hard to get to All-State, and it’s definitely an achievement when you do make it there.”
The opening ceremonies will be held tomorrow at 8 a.m. in Stephens Auditorium at Iowa State University in Ames, with the rest of the day filled with performances. The event is open to the public, with an $8 admission fee. Click the link below to view a complete schedule for the day.
