Area high school wrestlers competed in state qualifying matches Saturday, and representatives from both Perry and Adel-DeSoto-Minburn advanced to the State Tournament this week in Des Moines.

Perry sophomore Cole Nelson took first place in the qualifying meet at Ballard in the 113-pound weight class, while senior Erick Funez placed second at 138 to earn a trip to Wells Fargo Arena. This is Nelson’s second trip to State, and the first for Funez. Meanwhile ADM had one state qualifier at their meet in Atlantic, but it was a big one: senior Kaden Sutton, currently ranked number one in the state at 285 pounds, swept his competition and advanced to state carrying a 36-1 record this season. Sutton was the runner up last year at 220 pounds, losing to Woodward-Granger’s Cody Fischer in the finals.
