This Saturday, the Conservation departments from Dallas and Polk counties and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources invite the public to a rescheduled event to celebrate North America’s largest waterfowl species.
The Trumpeter Swan Soiree was originally scheduled for January 18th but was postponed due to weather. The program will be from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at Walnut Woods State Park in West Des Moines, and it’s free to attend. Dallas County Conservation Outreach Coordinator Ken Keffer says the event should be fun for all ages, and they expect over 100 swans to be in the area. “If you think back, not that long ago there just weren’t swans coming to Iowa in those numbers. So it’s really a conservation success story, and this is a great festival, you know (a) family friendly event. Get out there, make an afternoon of it, there should be swans still in the area. (There’s) some inside activities as well, so it’s a great one. A soiree! A swan soiree!”
Spotting scopes and binoculars will be provided, and free hot chocolate and cider, cookies, hot dogs, and other snacks will be available. Attendees can come and go throughout the event, and no registration is required.
