The postseason begins tomorrow for Class 1A and 2A wrestlers in Iowa with Sectional tournaments. Greene County goes to the Adel Sectional, one of just two in 2A with seven teams instead of the usual six. ADM and the Rams will be joined by Atlantic, Creston/Orient-Macksburg, Panorama, Winterset, Kuemper Catholic (Carroll). The top two individuals at each weight advance to the Atlantic District on Feb. 15 while the first and second place teams move on the Dual Meet Regionals Feb. 11.

C/O-M won the Hawkeye 10 Conference tournament and Winterset won the tournament in the Raccoon River Activities Conference. In addition. Greene County went 23-5 in dual meets, and the other teams all have top 10 ranked individuals.

Head Coach Zach Beekman comments about his wrestlers’ chances. “They’re definitely going to have to earn their way to districts, but it’s never a “gimme” that you’re going to make it. With the extra team and looking at how many rated guys are there, we may not have the most (of the 16 sectionals), but we’re up there. It’s tough and I don’t mind that, but we have to plan and prepare for it in how we practice as well.”

Greene County has one ranked wrestler in freshman McKinley Robbins at 106 lbs. He’s 30-1 on the season with a 26 match winning streak. Robbins is ranked second in 2A with his only loss early in the season to the number one ranked individual.

Wrestling starts at noon Saturday for all 1A and 2A tournaments.
