Saturday is the Iowa High School Speech Association State Large Group Contest.
Greene County High School qualified three entries with a total of 19 students. The events include Choral Reading, Short Film and Group Improvisation. Junior Justice Phillips is in Short Film and the production is called, “We Were There.” Phillips describes the film as a comedy/thriller about a group of students camping where strange things happen. He talks about why he wanted to be in Short Film.
“I think there’s a lot more of variety of things that you can do with film because you have a lot more time on of where you’re just sitting at a computer, where you can just keep brainstorming and brainstorming, like what can I add to this next? How can I tweak this? What flows better? You can kind of obsess over it and I think that worked more with my personality.”
Senior Lexie Miller describes the challenges her Choral Reading group had to overcome during their production of “Joy in Mudville.”
“It was kind of hard to get everybody together at the same time, for sure, because there’s a lot of us. And it was also very hard to stay on tone but still be loud enough that you could hear us. Because we were all worried about what we were saying and we weren’t being loud enough when we presented it.”
Greene County will compete at Waukee High School Saturday. The public is encouraged to attend and watch the performances. See the list below for the students that will compete on Saturday.
