Last night the State of Iowa kicked off the 2020 election cycle with the nation’s first caucus, and after an extended delay a portion of the results are in.
The hold-up has been caused by malfunctions in the Democratic Party’s new reporting system and them having to manually verify the delegates. Now, with around 62% of precincts reported, it’s still too close to declare a winner. The frontrunners are former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttegieg, who currently has 363 state delegate equivalents or 27% of the reported total, and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who is sitting at 338 SDEs or 25%. Rounding out the list is Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren with 18%, former Vice President Joe Biden with 16%, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar with 13%, and California entrepreneur Andrew Yang with 1%. More results are expected within the next day.
In Dallas County, there were a total of 140 delegates available, and Buttegieg came away with the most at 48. There was then a tie at 28 for Biden and Warren, with Sanders receiving 19, and Klobuchar rounding it out with 17. In specific local precincts, Adel 2 and Perry 1 each gave one delegate each to Buttegieg, Biden, Sanders, and Warren. Perry 2 awarded two delegates to Buttegieg, and one each to Biden and Warren. Adel 1 and Perry 3 each had three delegates, with Biden and Buttegieg earning one in both, and the third going to Warren in Adel and Sanders in Perry. Finally, Colfax-Adel gave their two delegates to Buttegieg and Warren, and the single delegate from Spring Valley – Dallas was awarded to Biden. Over 6,000 people caucused in Dallas County Monday evening.
On the Republican side of the ballot, things were a lot less complicated. Of the three candidates on the secret ballots presented to caucusgoers, incumbent President Donald Trump took 97% of the vote statewide and earned all but one of the party’s delegates. Former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld received the lone non-Trump delegate. The individual results in Dallas County mirrored the overall percentage.
