Roland-Story was a girl/boy Heart of Iowa Activities Conference winner vs. Greene County on Friday night in Story City. Both games were heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. The Class 3A fifth ranked R-S girls improved to 14-2 overall and 9-2 in the conference by cruising to an 85-19 victory while the Rams, playing their fourth game in five days, fell to 1-15 and 1-9. The Norsemen ended the boys’ game by scoring the last eight points and pulling out a 52-46 win vs. the Rams. R-S improved to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in league play. Greene County fell to 3-12 and 1-8.
The R-S girls made eight three-point goals- in the first quarter and finished the game 16 of 27 from long range. They were 30 of 47 overall for 68% and had just four turnovers despite playing all 14 girls suited for the contest. The Rams were seven of 32 from the floor (22%) with three three-pointers and 23 turnovers. The Rams turned the ball over on their first seven possessions. Sophomore Brianna Habben had 12 of the Rams’ 19 points. R-S had 11 players score points led by Emily Bergen with 24. She entered the contest scoring just over two points a game.
Greene County boys had the turnover bug early with nine in the first period and they fell behind 14-9 at the end of the first stanza. The Rams starting taking better care of the ball to lead 25-24 at halftime and 36-35 at the end of the third quarter. Six fourth quarter turnovers were costly as a 46-44 lead turned into a 52-46 loss. The Rams were six of 29 from three-point range and 17 of 52 overall. They were just two of four on foul shots. R-S had a big free throw advantage at 12 of 17 and they went six of 22 on three’s and 16 of 41 overall. Senior Dylan Ihle scored 19 for the Norsemen with junior Adam McIllrath adding 16 points. Greene County had 11 points off the bench from freshman Jessie Miller and 11 by senior Carter Morton.
A make up doubleheader is set for Monday with Gilbert in the middle school gym in Jefferson on KG98 and streaming on www.raccoonvalleyardio.com. The Rams remain home on Tuesday night with Nevada.
