In addition to all the excitement surrounding tomorrow’s 43rd annual Bike Ride to Rippey, or BRR Ride, there’s also a great deal of anticipation for the grand opening of the newest pub in Perry: the Proletariat.

The bar and restaurant is owned by Jeremy Mahler, who also owns the next door Common Wealth Provisions sandwich and butcher shop. It’s located on 2nd Street in downtown Perry, in the spot that used to be Bacon’s Jewelers. Mahler says the establishment is inspired by Michael’s Pub, which operated in Perry when he was younger. He refers to it as an “upscale dive bar,” where people can have a conversation and also have some fun. It includes a pool table, pinball machine, and a few thousand books on the walls.

Mahler says he’s been working tirelessly to get the space ready for customers, and he’s excited to have achieved his mission of opening for tomorrow’s winter ride. “Our goal to get open for BRR was to get as many people’s eyes on our business as possible, and that’s a great avenue to do that. It’s a great opportunity for all the businesses of Perry to kind of showcase themselves to people that they might not normally get to come into their businesses. So that was our goal here, was to get open and try and showcase ourselves.”

In addition to being open for BRR, Mahler says the Proletariat will also host a “Big Game” party on Sunday, and a pre-caucus party on Monday. They will then take a few days off before opening for regular hours, which will be weekdays from 4-10 p.m. and weekends from 4 p.m. until people head home.
