The final countdown is on for the 2020 Iowa Caucuses, so here is some information on Monday’s statewide event.
Caucus locations for both the Democratic and Republican parties will open at 6 p.m., and people will need to register at their precinct location. Anyone who preregistered for their site will simply have to check in. Party leadership points out that people must be in the registration line no later than 7 p.m. on Monday in order to take part, and latecomers will not be admitted. As a reminder, the Republican caucus process is unchanged this year, but there is a change to the Democratic side. The new rule is that if your group is viable after the first count, even if in the undecided group, you are unable to change candidates after that. Only those in groups whose candidates are not viable are able to shift to a different group.
The respective political parties also remind people to check their caucus location prior to Monday night. In Dallas County, Republican sites include: Adel-DeSoto-Minburn High School for Adel 1 and 2; Peace Lutheran Church in Adel for Adams; Woodward Middle School for Beaver – Des Moines; Washington Township school for Lincoln – Washington – Linn; Country Lane Lodge for Colfax – Adel; Van Meter High School for DeSoto; Dallas Center Memorial Hall for Sugar Grove – Dallas Center; the Dexter Roundhouse for Union; and the Perry Public Library for Perry 1, 2, and 3, and Spring Valley – Dallas. Democratic locations in Dallas County include: ADM Middle School for Adel 1; Grace Lutheran Church in Adel for Adams and Adel 2; Woodward-Granger High School for Beaver – Des Moines; ADM High School for Colfax – Adel; DeSoto Intermediate School for DeSoto; West Central Valley Middle School for Lincoln – Washington – Linn and Union; Dallas Center-Grimes Middle School for Sugar Grove – Dallas Center; Perry Middle School for Perry 1 and 3; and Perry Elementary for Perry 2 and Spring Valley – Dallas.
There are three candidates vying for the Republican nomination, including incumbent President Donald Trump, former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld, and former Illinois Congressman Joe Walsh. Meanwhile, there are 12 individuals currently in the running for the Democratic bid, including Colorado Senator Michael Bennet, former Vice President Joe Biden, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttegieg, former Maryland Congressman John Delaney, Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, California hedge fund executive Tom Steyer, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, and California entrepreneur Andrew Yang.
