The cold of winter in central Iowa may not be ideal for many outdoor activities, but one local emergency crew recently took advantage of the weather for some specialized training.
Late Tuesday night, the Adel Fire and Rescue Department headed out onto a frozen pond to practice ice rescues. A department representative said they’ve done ice rescue training many times in the past, though this was the first time they’ve ever done it at night. It was pointed out, the colder temperatures and low visibility of a winter night create a host of additional complications for an ice rescue, and getting the opportunity to practice in those conditions was beneficial. The department felt the crews handled the training well, and some even had a little fun while doing it.
The training was conducted with the help of Professional Rescue Innovations and the Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau. To view additional pictures and video of the ice training, click the link below to visit the Adel Fire and Rescue Facebook page.
