Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders paid a visit to Perry Sunday, and in the process filled La Poste with people eager to learn more about his bid for President of the United States.
Sanders returned to Perry for the second time, having hosted a town hall at the McCreary Community Building last May. He was originally going to visit the City on January 10th, but had to reschedule the event due to a snowstorm. The make-up event featured a pair of notable supporters, with New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and filmmaker Michael Moore warming up the capacity crowd at La Poste. As the Senator took the stage, he was briefly interrupted by a pair of animal welfare protestors, who were escorted out of the building.
Sanders then talked about his campaign and the chief issues he’s based it on, including big changes to healthcare, the economy, education, the environment, and others that have become rallying points for his supporters. He wrapped up his speech by emphasizing Iowa’s importance in the election process. “This is, I think we can all agree, the most consequential election in modern American history. And Iowa goes first. You will be the first state voting in the 2020 election cycle. So what happens here is enormously important. So I am here this afternoon to very humbly ask for your support.”
Sanders did not stay for questions, as he had to hit the road for another campaign stop. The 2020 Iowa Caucuses are a week from today, and the Senator is one of 12 individuals seeking to win the state and in turn the Democratic nomination for President.
