Greene County and Grandview Christian (Des Moines) played in the first of four games in Gilbert Saturday at a boys’ basketball showcase. A three-point shooting showcase is what it turned out to be and the Thunder had the better of it, 74-57. Grandview improved to 7-5 while the Rams fell to 3-9.
Senior guard Gage Fry had 15 of his game-high 29 points in the first quarter including four three-pointers. The Thunder made seven three’s in the opening period and raced out to a 26-10 lead. They finished 12 of 20 from long range with five of the long-range baskets by Fry. Overall, GVC was 31 of 71 from the field. The shooting percent was right at their season average, but the percentage of possessions they scored on was much higher due to repeated offensive rebounds. Daniel Tobiloba, a 6′ 10″ freshman had something to do with that, as well as blocking shots and patrolling the lane defensively. Sophomore Manny Hammonds had 15 points.
Greene County was nine for 23 from three-point ranged 24 of 55 overall. The Rams had 17 turnovers, six more than their opponent. Neither team shot free throws well with the Rams at four of nine and the Thunder at nine for 17.
Senior Cael Fisher came off the bench to lead the Rams with 11 points, followed by 10 from senior Nick Breon and eight each from senior Carter Morton and freshman Richard Dougherty.
