Coming off an upset win on Tuesday night at Heart of Iowa Activities Conference leader South Hamilton in Jewell, the Greene County boys’ basketball team had a chance to win consecutive games for the first time this season. Instead, a Friday night road trip to Woodward to face Woodward Academy resulted in a 52-47 loss to the Knights in non-conference play, and coach Chris Nelson’s team fell to 3-9 on the season. WA improved to 5-7.
Greene County led 11-9 after one quarter and 26-19 at the half, but were out scored 33-21 in the second half. Down by just three points late, the Rams fouled the Knights with five seconds remaining and two made free throws sealed the win for the home team. Coach Nelson told Raccoon Valley Radio he felt his team was flat in the second half.
Senior Carter Morton led Greene County in scoring with 19 points and freshman Richard Doughery scored a career high nine points in just his fourth varsity game. Junior Zach Goff added seven points.
It’s back on the bus this morning as the Rams face Grandview Christian (Des Moines) in Gilbert in a Boys’ Basketball Showcase hosted by the Tigers. The Rams and Defenders play the first of four games featuring eight different teams. We’ll have the play-by-play at noon today on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com with coverage starting at 11:30 a.m.
