Emma Hoyle heads to Waverly today wrestling in the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association State Tournament at Waverly-Shell Rock High School. Her varsity teammates go to Jewell for the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference tournament. Both events begin at 5 p.m.
Hoyle is the lone girl out for wrestling at Greene County High. The freshman has been wrestling at 145 lbs. where she is 7-1 with six falls. Her goal is to weigh in and wrestle at 138 lbs. today. The State Meet is a two-day affair with some 350 girls across the state scheduled to compete. There were less than 90 girls in the State Tournament a year ago
The varsity is expected to battle Gilbert, PCM, and North Polk (Alleman) for the HOIAC tournament title. Roland-Story (Story City), Nevada, PCM, Saydel (Des Moines), and the host South Hamilton Hawks are also in the field. The teams that come closest to filling all 14 weight classes may have the best chances of winning. The Rams have been without regular 145 lbs. sophomore Nate Black due to an ankle injury and it remains to be seen if he’ll wrestle tonight. Freshman McKinley Robbins is likely to be the top seed at 106 lbs. He’s 21-1 on the season and ranked second or third in Class 2A, depending on the poll. Several other Rams could place high as well.
