About 20 people braved the snow for a meet and greet event in Jefferson for a U.S. Congressman who is campaigning for a Democratic presidential candidate.
Congressman Joaquin Castro from Texas stopped at the Thomas Jefferson Gardens Education and Welcome Center Wednesday morning to campaign for U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, who is running for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. The four-term representative said he and his twin brother Julian Castro – the former Democratic presidential candidate and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development – endorsed Warren because they believe she will make sure every individual in the country counts.
Castro also shared his thoughts on the importance of the Iowa Caucuses, when Iowa became the first in the nation to caucus in 1972.
“It was very special, especially to be here with my brother, and to make the rounds with my brother, and now for Senator Warren to go to the different towns in Iowa and to see people really take the time to vett the candidates. What that means for the state (of Iowa), really the candidates and the campaigns really do descend upon all of the towns and the communities. Just like it takes effort, I think, from the candidates to do that, I also think it takes effort from the community to go through that, and vett everybody and to, in a sense, interview everybody.”
Castro was the chair for Julian’s presidential campaign. After Julian ended his candidacy, Joaquin then endorsed Warren.
