One night after scoring a season low 26 points, the Greene County boys’ basketball team pulled off the biggest win in recent seasons when Coach Chris Nelson’s team knocked off Heart of Iowa Activities Conference leader South Hamilton in Jewell on Tuesday night. The Rams won 56-54 to improve to 1-6 in the conference and 3-8 overall while the Hawks fell to 6-1 in conference play and 7-3 overall.
Greene County trailed 30-18 late in the second quarter before trimming the deficit to seven points at intermission, 32-25. The game was tied 39-39 at the end of quarter number three, then after a 42-all tie early in the fourth, the Rams built the lead to as many as eight points before the Hawks banked in a three-point goal just before the final buzzer to make it a two point final margin. Senior Carter Morton had 14 points with senior Caden Lowmiller at 12 and sophomore Bryce Stalder 11. Freshmen Richard Dougherty and Jessie Miller each scored seven points. The Rams made seven shots from three point range including three by Lowmiller. Six of the seven long range shots were made by players coming off the bench. Twenty-eight of the Rams’ 56 points were by players who didn’t start the game.
SH was led in scoring by 6′ 5″ senior Cade Balvanz with 19 points.Doran Lutjen scored 11 for the Hawks.
Greene County led the girls game 10-4 in the first quarter, then trailed 23-16 at the half, and 36-22 at the end of the third quarter. The final was 51-32 as the Rams fell to 0-11 overall and 0-7 in the conference while the Hawks improved to 5-6 and 3-4. Izzy Bravard had 14 points for the Rams and Hailee Feaker scored 13 for SH.
