Congressman Steve King

With the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump underway in the U.S. Senate, one Congressman continues to believe Trump is innocent.

Iowa’s Fourth Congressional District Representative Steve King was frustrated with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi following the House’s majority vote to impeach the President on charges of obstruction of Congress and abuse of power. He feels Pelosi used her power as House Speaker to delay transferring the impeachment articles to the Senate, strictly as a political move. King remains vigilant in his defense of Trump and the charges are unwarranted.

King says Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has put himself in the position as a judge, prior to the start of the actual trial, which will be overseen by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

“A judge will decide what evidence gets submitted and what doesn’t get admitted, and what can be said and what isn’t. If you give a judge all the authority to do that and you believe you get a fair trial, why would you say to Mitch McConnell, ‘the president isn’t going to get a fair trial if you are working with the president?’ Mitch McConell has to look at each side of this thing and decide what he’s going to recommend the majority of the senators that will be allowed to come before the trial against the President of the United States.”

King points out the most likely scenario is the Senate taking a moderate length of time to present some witnesses to give the public a sense of a trial. Even though King believes Trump will be acquitted by the Senate, he prefers a longer trial so that everyone can have access to the sides that the House didn’t present during the impeachment hearings.
