Winter isn’t typically a time when most people in Iowa would go outside in the evening to view the splendor of the night sky, but Dallas County Conservation hopes to change that with a program this weekend.

The event is called “Winter Stargazing, Constellations, and Stories,” and will be held Saturday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Kuehn Conservation Area southwest of Adel. Attendees will have the opportunity to step into the shoes of early cultures, which Conservation staff says took sunset as an invitation to look up and wonder, regardless of the cold. Dallas County Naturalists will take people through a journey across the evening sky, explaining both the science behind what they see and the folklore associated with it. The program is free, though registration is required. Attendees should bring their own seating and blankets, and should dress for the weather.
