In the first week of the 2020 Iowa legislative session Republican senators introduced a constitutional amendment restricting the right to an abortion, renewing a proposal from last year.
This amendment is an effort to undo a 2018 Iowa Supreme Court ruling that protects a fundamental right to an abortion in the state. State House District 20 Representative Ray Sorensen, a Republican, says he doesn’t think this amendment will come to a House floor vote very soon. He agrees with a statement he made to Raccoon Valley Radio last session that he’s willing to listen to a compromise on the issue, “You know Republicans and Democrats are always in power and so it seems to me when we try to move the ball so far one way then the next party gets into power and moves it back the other way. And I feel like if we sat down at the table and worked together and tried to find a compromise we could start moving past some of this stuff and looking at our other state’s priorities.”
Governor Kim Reynolds (R) also called on legislators to pass this constitutional amendment, which has now advanced to the full Senate State Government Committee. If it passes in the legislature this year, it would have to pass again in 2021 before having voters decide in a statewide election. To hear more from Rep. Sorensen, listen to Monday’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County program on air and at raccoonvalleyradio.com.
