With several inches of snowfall expected today and tomorrow, it’s one of the first chances this year for people to use their shovels again. With that in mind, there are some safety tips for people to remember when shoveling.

21st Century Rehabilitation Director of Rehab at Greene County Medical Center Deb Morton recommends warming your body up before shoveling to avoid potential injuries. Start by doing some back stretches, arm circles and taking a short walk. Once your body has warmed up, Morton has some other reminders when shoveling snow.

“So you want to make sure that you’re lifting with your legs and not your back. Make sure that your knees are bending and you’re straightening to lift the shovel, using your legs instead of your back. Make sure that you push the snow rather than pull the snow. So it’s a little bit easier and better for your back if you can push the snow.”

Morton says the typical ailments resulting from shoveling snow include back and shoulder injuries, along with pulled or strained muscles. She adds to pace yourself when shoveling, don’t overexert your body and take frequent breaks if needed.
