The 2020 Iowa General Assembly kicks off this coming week, and local legislators are getting prepared for another busy session.
The Legislature will convene Monday, starting with the annual report from Governor Kim Reynolds where she’ll discuss her priorities for the year. There will also be reports from the other branches of the state government throughout the week, and then the legislators will begin constructing the various bills to be considered. State Senator Jake Chapman, (R) District 10, says he’s excited to get back to work at the Capital, and he promises to continue the agenda he’s established since being elected. “I think Iowans can expect to see more of what we have done over the last few years. These last few years we’ve had the opportunity under a Republican-controlled Legislature and a Republican Governor to grow our economy (and) to do tax cuts. And we’re going to build on those successes.”
Some of the topics Chapman expects to discuss this year include: continued tax reform; increasing mental health services and funding to schools; and constitutional amendments dealing with abortion rights, felon voting, and bearing arms.
