The recent winter weather event in central Iowa led to several wrecks over the weekend, including one fatality in Dallas County. With much of winter ahead, local law enforcement urges winter driving safety.

Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn emphasizes that the most important thing you can do is drive to the current conditions, regardless of what type of vehicle you have. “The biggest thing I can say is if it’s snowing (or) looking a little slick, just slow down. Take a little time, leave a little earlier than maybe you would. If you’re coming up and you’re starting to slide, or if you’re thinking you’re going to go around a corner, get off that gas and that will help you maintain control of your vehicle a little bit more.”

Vaughn also points out that most cars now have anti-lock brakes, which can help if your vehicle is sliding. He recommends you pump your breaks and steer the direction of your skid, while also attempting to avoid colliding with anything or leaving the road, if possible. If you do find yourself in a weather related wreck, Vaughn recommends calling law enforcement right away, and staying in your car until help arrives in order to stay warm.
