A double-dual during the week and a Saturday tournament would be a normal week for most Iowa high school wrestling teams. There’s not much normal about what the Rams will be going through this week! Coach Zach Beekman’s team opens the 2020 portion of the schedule tomorrow night in Woodward facing Woodward-Granger, Martensdale-St. Mary’s, and Nodaway Valley in a non-conference quadrangular. The Rams have another non-conference quad on Thursday, this time in the middle school gym in Jefferson, with Audubon, Ogden, and Southeast Valley (Gowrie). That’s just the tip of the scheduling iceberg.
Friday, the Rams go to Alleman for the North Polk Round-Robin Tournament with with five other teams. They’ll return home late Friday night, then get back on the bus early Saturday morning for the more than 90 mile trip to Monroe for the 14-team PCM Invitational. If there are no forfeits during the dual meets, or open weights at the two tournaments, it’s possible one or more Greene County wrestlers could get as many as 16 matches in between Tuesday and Saturday. It’s as crowded a schedule the Rams may have ever had in a five-day period in the 55 years of high school wrestling based in Jefferson.
Head coach Zach Beekman told Raccoon Valley Radio his wrestlers will get a one pound weight allowance on Friday, then another pound for Saturday’s weigh-in due to wrestling three consecutive days.
