Greene County High School’s only female wrestler is in action today. Freshman Emma Hoyle goes to Colfax this morning for the Colfax-Mingo tournament starting at 10 a.m. The event has a girls’ division and a separate JV boys’ division.
This is Hoyle’s second event of the season. She went 1-1 last month at Des Moines East against girls from much larger schools in Ankeny Centennial and Valley (West Des Moines). Zach Beekman is Greene County’s head wrestling coach and he was asked about Emma’s strengths as a wrestler. “She just loves to battle! She’s not real technically sound yet, but hasn’t been wrestling a ton either. So she just likes to go out there and scrap and do what she can. She doesn’t really like to lose, so she’ll do what she can to get the win!”

The coach added he saw the video of her Des Moines East matches. “She looked good. I was thoroughly impressed with the technique that she did have. She loves to go out there and it didn’t really matter who the girls are. She just wants to go out and compete.”

The rest of the Greene County wrestlers go to Woodward on Tuesday, Jan. 7 for a quadrangular hosted by Woodward-Granger.
