A new program allows Iowa prisoners to build homes, with one slated to come to Jefferson.

Region XII Council of Governments Executive Director Rick Hunsaker says the housing program originated in South Dakota, and partners Iowa Councils of Governments and the Iowa Department of Corrections-Iowa Prison Industries. Prisoners from Newton will build stick framed homes for Iowa communities that qualify. Two of the four initial homes will be delivered, in one piece, to Perry and Jefferson. Hunsaker says there are several advantages of utilizing a program like this, including the price of the home of $75,000, giving prisoners trade skills that are needed in the industry and reducing the number of repeat offenders.

“In South Dakota, it has been 30 and higher percent decreased recidivism. It’s been a great program as far as family stability, community policing (and) positive effects on the justice system. Really it betters people’s lives both from an offender’s standpoint and the potential victim’s standpoint.”

Hunsaker notes the 1,200-square-feet house includes three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a garage, to be located in the 500 block of North Cedar Street in Jefferson. He adds, it will be a high quality home that will be delivered in mid January.
