One person suffered severe injuries from a two vehicle crash on Interstate 80 in Adair County Saturday afternoon.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash happened near mile marker 93 at 3:42pm. A 2019 Volvo truck was heading west and it was stopped with traffic in the right lane, due to the left lane being temporarily blocked from a separate crash. A 2017 Freightliner truck was also heading west on the interstate and it was approaching the Volvo at interstate speed but couldn’t stop in time. The Freightliner tried to avoid hitting the Volvo and veered into the right lane, but it struck the right rear end of the Volvo’s trailer.
The driver of the Freightliner, 32-year-old Massoud Babak of Livermore, California suffered severe injuries and was transported by Stuart Rescue to Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. The driver of the Volvo, 32-year-old Alexander Kucherenko of Fort Meyers, Florida was uninjured. The Freightliner was a total loss. The State Patrol crash report shows Babak was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Stuart Police assisted at the scene.
