From now through the end of 2019, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is instituting their latest special Traffic Enforcement Program, or “sTEP Wave.”

Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn says his department is once again joining with most other local law enforcement agencies around Iowa to take part. He explains, officers will be out in greater numbers to ensure drivers are obeying the law during the holiday season, with a particular emphasis. “So we’re out there again enforcing seatbelt laws, but also taking special aim on impaired drivers especially this time of season. You know, we have holiday parties and get-togethers and that type of thing. And you know New Years Eve is coming up. So we want to make sure that drivers are making good decisions out there, not drinking and driving.”

Vaughn adds, through the sTEP program, local law enforcement is afforded overtime hours so officers can have a bigger presence on the roads during heavy traffic holidays. The money is also used to purchase breath testing devices, body cameras, and squad car cameras, which Vaughn says are helpful not only during the busy seasons, but all year round.
