Lions Larry Brandt and Bill Sheeder give a vision screening.

The Guthrie Center Lions Club has played an active role at the local elementary recently to promote a community of good.
The club held their annual KidSight vision screening at Guthrie Center Elementary. Screenings were done for 38 children to identify issues that a child can’t recognize or describe. These free screenings are done by taking a photo of the child’s eyes with a specialized camera. Those results are then interpreted by specialists at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. The Guthrie Center and Panora Lions clubs purchased this specialized camera for about $10,000, which requires several hours of training to use.
The club also sponsored a peace poster contest for the 6th graders, and student Jack Sheeder was awarded 1st place. His poster will be submitted in a worldwide contest, for which the grand prize includes a $5,000 cash prize, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to a special award ceremony.
