Tuesday morning, Perry High School students organized a walk-out in support of a staff member they’ve worked with.
Superintendent Clark Wicks said he couldn’t get too detailed on the reasons behind the protest, as it involves personnel decisions. However, he said he had several conversations with different groups of students who wanted to voice their feelings, and he encouraged them to take the walk-out route. Wicks was complimentary of the students in that the demonstration was peaceful and followed the school’s rules to the letter. Around 85 students in grades 9-12 took part in the walk-out, which lasted for about 30 minutes.
Wicks emphasized that the administration is always open to conversations with students if they are upset about something. He felt the walk-out was a good opportunity for the staff and students to teach and listen to each other, and believes the District is stronger as a result. He also thanked the Perry Police Department for being on hand to ensure everyone stayed safe and that the demonstration progressed without incident.
