The recently-dedicated Dallas County Freedom Rock was the victim of a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning.
According to Dallas County Sheriff Chad Leonard, a 21-year-old male driver was northbound on Highway 169 into Minburn at about 4:30 a.m. when his vehicle left the roadway and collided with the freedom rock, causing it to tip over on its north side. The driver was transported by Dallas County EMS to MercyOne West Des Moines Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. There were no other passengers in the vehicle. Leonard says excessive speed was likely a factor in the crash. The name of the driver and any possible charges are pending an ongoing investigation. Leonard says repairs to the rock, which was dedicated last October, will likely be extensive, including redigging the hole where it sat. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information when it becomes official.
