The Perry boys and girls varsity basketball teams opened play in the Raccoon River Conference Friday night at home against Carroll, but didn’t get the results they hoped for, falling 75-28 in the girls game and 71-20 in the boys.

The Jayettes got off to a poor start on offense, with the Tiger full-court-press proving a difficult maze to navigate. While Perry’s defense played relatively well, Carroll was able to force countless turnovers for easy baskets en route to a 20-3 lead after the first quarter and 42-10 lead at halftime. The Jayettes fortunes improved slightly in the second half, but it proved far from enough as the game ended with a final of 75-28. Perry was led in scoring by senior Mollie Lutmer, who posted 11 points despite seeing tight defense and double teams all night.

The boys game started much the same, with Carroll sprinting out to an early lead and stifling the Bluejays offense to the tune of a 16-2 lead after one quarter. Their foot remained on the gas in the second, as they frequently went to senior Kelin Jones in the post, and he scored all 15 of his points in the first half. The Tigers led after two quarters by a score of 40-6. Perry managed a bit more offense in the second half, doubling their point total in the third quarter, but in the end they only managed 20 points on the night, while allowing 71 to Carroll. The leading scorers for the Bluejays were senior Avery Meister and freshman Sncere Johnson, who both finished with six points.

The losses drop the Jayettes to 2-2 and the Bluejays to 0-2, and both teams are now 0-1 in Raccoon River Conference play. Their next games will be this coming Thursday at Stuart, as they play a boy-girl doubleheader against West Central Valley.
