Four fire departments responded to a smokehouse fire at Dahl’s Custom Meat Locker in Bagley Thursday evening.
As heard live on Raccoon Valley Radio, agencies were called out at about 4:30 p.m. to an out of control fire at the business located at 111 West 3rd Street. Bagley Assistant Fire Chief Jeremy Cooper says the fire was mostly contained to the smokehouse located in the center of the building. Cooper says there is some smoke damage and minimal water damage to the building, and no injuries were reported. Crews were finished at the scene at approximately 5:45 p.m. Bagley, Jamaica, Yale, and Panora Fire Departments, MidAmerican Energy, and Alliant Energy assisted at the scene.
Locker Co-owner Kaitlin Dahl says the fire was caused by grease that overflowed in their smoker while employees were smoking pork bellies that afternoon. Dahl and other staff attempted to extinguish the fire before calling fire agencies. She says most of their meat was unscathed, and they plan on buying a new smoker. Dahl also plans on having the Iowa Department of Ag and Land Stewardship inspect the facility. The meat locker has been operated by the Dahls since April.
