As the year 2019 draws to a close, Dallas County Conservation is offering one last event in their yearlong celebration of the 70th anniversary of a famous publication.
Throughout the year, Conservation has offered a series of programs devoted to Aldo Leopold and his book, “A Sand County Almanac.” Each event in the series has focused on specific essays from the guide, and the final offering will focus on a pair of them. On Sunday, December 8th from 2-4 p.m., the public is invited to the Kuehn Conservation Area, southwest of Adel, to examine the essay “Home Range,” as well as the story of a banded chickadee referred to as “65290,” which concludes the book. For the former essay, participants will explore how “roughly acquainted” they are with the world, using examples of various woodland animals in their home ranges.
The latter story will take attendees on a journey to connect 65290’s story to those of banded American Kestrels. There is no cost to attend the program, but registration is required. To learn more or to sign up, stop in or call Forest Park Museum at 515-465-3577.
