The varsity basketball teams from Greene County hope to do better tonight when they open the home portion of the schedule tonight vs. Perry in the middle school gym in Jefferson. The Rams opened the girls and boys seasons last night in Ogden with a pair of losses, and cold shooting, fouls, and turnovers, made for a rough night.
The Rams lost the girls’ game 54-20 after trailing by just 12-9 at the end of the first quarter and 26-15 at halftime. Coach Tyler Westhoff’s team was seven of 28 from the field (25%), three of 15 from the free throw line (20%), and had 24 turnovers. Ogden made 20 of 57 shots from the floor (35%) to go with 20 turnovers and 12 of 19 free throw shooting (63%).
Sophomore Breanna Habben led Greene County scorers with 12 points. Izzy Bravard and Sadie Wilson each had four points. Bravard was in foul trouble very early, and the only other senior, Cassie Lamoureux, suffered knee and wrist injuries just 1:51 into the season, and it’s possible she could miss considerable time.
Ogden was led by Gabby Ross with 13 points and Faith Mohr with 11. The Bulldogs started five seniors.
On the boys’ side, the Bulldogs didn’t shoot the ball well from the field (9 of 39), but they cashed in at the foul line, going 35 of 51. Six of the charity stripe misses came late in the contest and had no effect on the outcome. Senior Griffen Diggs had 32 points and was the lone Ogden player to reach double digits in points. The Rams were 11 of 41 from the floor, 22 of 28 shooting free throws, and turned the ball over 29 times. Carter Morton and Bryce Stalder each scored 10 points for Greene County and Cael Fisher had eight.
The Rams led 12-2 early, and were up 22-21 at intermission. The third quarter saw Ogden take the lead, thanks in no small part to 14 turnovers and 10 fouls by the Rams in that stanza alone.
One of the unusual stats from the boys’ contest was that neither team made a three-point goal. The Rams were 0-21 and the Bulldogs 0-7.
Tonight, Greene County and Perry start their doubleheader at 6 p.m. with the girls’ game, followed by the boys. Coverage on KG98.9 FM, KDLS 1310 AM and 99.7 FM begins at 5:45 p.m.
