The Exalted Rulers from the Perry and Jefferson Elks Lodges were recently honored by the President of the national Elks organization at an event in Des Moines.
Greg Haglund of the Perry Elks Lodge, number 407, and Steve Smith from the Jefferson Lodge, number 2306, attended the Iowa Elks Association fall state convention on November 1st and 2nd. Among the dignitaries at the event was the Grand Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Robert Duitsman, and his wife, First Lady Beth. Duitsman was elected Elks President this past year, having served the last 30 years with the Culver, California Elks Lodge, number 1917. Haglund and Smith said it was an honor to be recognized by the Grand Exalted Ruler, and that he exemplifies what it means to be an Elk. Lisa Widick with the Iowa State Elks Association Public Relations Department added, the chance to meet with an Elks President is a rare opportunity, and one not to be taken lightly.
The Elks National Foundation was established in 1928, and includes community outreach such as scholarships for students, veterans programs, and other charitable work.
